Fluoroscopy for transpedicular screw placement in scoliosis: what is the best method of measuring radiation exposure?
نویسندگان
چکیده
We congratulate the authors for reporting their results. Ege et al. have shared their results that they got from the fluoroscopy device retrospectively. We think that this study method could not prove the exact amount of radiation exposure that impacts the surgical team correctly. The authors compare their study with similar studies (2, 3) that measure radiation exposure by dosimetry as more objectively. Disuse of dosimetry damages the objectivity of the study and limits the article. The authors of the article did not measure amount of radiation per screw, in contrast to the studies they reference. This is the other weak point of the article. REFERENCES

Fluoroscopy for transpedicular screw placement in scoliosis: to what extent can radiation exposure be reduced by the freehand technique?
AIM In spinal surgery, high doses of radiation are delivered during surgical procedures that require fluoroscopic control. The aim of this study was to determine the amount of radiation delivered from the fluoroscopic unit and also the factors to reduce the amount of radiation during the surgery of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective study 21 p...

Background: The purpose of this prospective study was to determine the accuracy of pedicular screw insertion withoutthe use of fluoroscopy. Methods: This study was conducted on patients with spinal diseases in need of pedicular screw fixation and fusion. The included patients suffered from such conditions as vertebral fracture, spinal stenosis, kyphosis, tumor, and pelvicf...
متن کاملA retrospective comparison of intraoperative CT and fluoroscopy evaluating radiation exposure in posterior spinal fusions for scoliosis
Background Radiation exposure is a concern in the field of medicine. Deformity spine surgeons depend on modalities that have high exposure through scoliosis x-rays or computed tomography. The use of fluoroscopy has increased with the increased use of pedicle screws. Recently other 3-D imaging devices with navigation have also been brought onto the market to improve accuracy of screw placement. ...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the clinical utility and accuracy of intraoperative three-dimensional fluoroscopy as an adjunct for the placement of a complex spinal instrumentation. METHODS The Siemens Iso-C three-dimensional fluoroscopy unit in the combination with the Stealth Treon computer volumetric navigational system was used. A total of 279 spinal ins...
متن کاملA cadaveric study comparing standard fluoroscopy with fluoroscopy-based computer navigation for screw fixation of the odontoid.
Although direct osteosynthesis of certain types of odontoid fractures may increase union and decrease the need for prolonged immobilization, screw fixation remains a technically demanding procedure. This study compares radiation exposure, surgical time, and accuracy of hardware placement using standard fluoroscopy versus computer-assisted fluoroscopy-based navigation ("virtual fluoroscopy") to ...
